Hey guys,
I hope you’re having a great week. This week’s Thought comes from Numbers 12:3, “Now Moses was very humble, more humble than any other person on earth.”
I need to forewarn you, this passage has beaten me up over the last few days. There are some pretty deep truths here, and God has been peeling back some layers in me. I’m not sure if it’s true that misery loves company, but maybe God will beat you up a little bit too as I share this with you!
“Moses was more humble than any person on earth.” Let’s put that in perspective.
Moses was God’s chosen leader for God’s chosen people. He was God’s mouthpiece to His people and also to Pharaoh, the most powerful man on the planet in Moses’ time. He went to Pharaoh and said, “Let my people go.” God sent the plagues, and then Pharaoh ultimately let God’s people go from 400 years of slavery! Then Moses led his people to the banks of the Red Sea while Pharaoh and his armies were barreling down. Moses raised his staff, and the Red Sea parted, and the people walked for miles and miles on dry land! He was the unquestioned leader of God’s chosen people, and here they were on the cusp of entering into the Promised Land, a promise that was given to Abraham over 500 years prior, and yet, Moses was the most humble person on Earth!
That’s even harder to grasp when you look a little bit farther into chapter 12. In verses 7-8, God said this, “Of all my house, he is the one I trust. I speak to him clearly and not in riddles."
He saw the Lord as He is, and yet he’s the most humble person on earth! How is that possible?! When somebody gives me a compliment, my head grows a little bit. When somebody pats me on the back, I feel a little bit more sure of myself. Moses was God’s chosen leader and mouthpiece for His people. God worked miracles through him, and yet he was the most humble person on earth. How?
Here’s the lesson and what I’ve discovered over the last few days… Moses was in constant communication with God and had a clear understanding of who he was and more importantly, who he wasn’t. He understood who he was in light of who God is. I began to think about what that looks like in my own life. I love teaching, sharing, and speaking. I love reading Scripture. I love sitting down with my brothers and sisters in Christ and talking about those things. I love listening to worship music, but I realized that in all of those things, I am pursuing the things of God. I don’t always pursue God!
So, maybe God is hitting you right between the eyes today like He did to me this week. You’re taking it all in, but here’s the key point to all of this… to understand who we are in light of God requires communication with God.
Are you pursuing Him as much as you should? Are you pursuing Him as much as you are pursuing the things about Him?
Love you guys,
John
