Weekly Thoughts From Outside the Boat

Hey guys,

We have had an incredible week. We celebrated our 20th Anniversary this past weekend. It was great to be able to reconnect with people we haven't seen in a while, or we haven't had a chance to serve with in years. We also had our mission partners in from all over the world: the Middle East and the Far East. Even in the midst of all that, I want to share something with you that I read just the other morning. This week’s Thought comes from Psalm 103 and 104. It's three verses from Psalm 103 and the first verse of Psalm 104. The same phrase is repeated four times. “Let all that I am praise you.”

David’s repetition obviously caught my attention, and I began to ask, what does that mean for me? Let all that I am — all that I have — praise Him. So, what does it mean to praise Him? We honor Him for who He is, obviously, but we're also pointing people to Him.

I started making a list of things in my life that I have available to me to praise Him —  the things I have available to me that I can use to point people to Him. At first, I made a short list, but as I continued to contemplate the question, my list continued to grow.  Though our salaries, or our day-to-day schedule may be different, there are some universal things that we all can use to praise Him: time, money, skills, relationships, opportunities for service, passions, my general attitude, and even how I treat others.

“Let all that I am praise You." We might all say this is something that we definitely do on Sunday morning, but do we do it all the time? When we do praise, do we do it with all that we have? Praising the Lord is NOT something we just do at church or in Bible study, or in a small group setting. All those are great, but David is very clear here, “Let ALL that I am praise You”.

So, let me challenge you this week. Take some time and write down the things in your life that you can use to praise the Lord, or you can use to point others to Him. If you take your time and take an honest evaluation, that list will be longer than you think!

Love you guys,

John
