Hey guys,

This week’s Thought comes from Proverbs 15:14. There, David says, “A wise person is hungry for knowledge, while the fool feeds on trash.”

Other translations say “folly” or “foolishness,” but the NLT’s use of “trash” seemed a little more harsh and caught my attention as I was reading through chapter 15.

I started asking myself, “How often do I pursue knowledge? How often do I actively pursue the things of God?” When I need wisdom, when I'm in a tough spot and need direction, or I want a prayer answered in my life, of course I'm going to pursue the things of God. But this idea of feeding on trash… I think sometimes it's not necessarily the trashy things in our culture that immediately come to mind, but more the absence of the pursuit of knowledge and wisdom.

When I'm at my weakest, it is always when I'm not actively pursuing. When I’m not actively pursuing, my treasury depletes. It makes me think of Matthew 12:35, “A good person produces good fruit from the treasury of a good heart.” This is the idea of needing to constantly pour into and accumulate “good things” in our treasuries. I don’t build up that treasury by simply staying away from the trash, it comes from pursuing – actively, aggressively pursuing – the things of Jesus.

In a moment of honesty this morning, I realized I don't do that nearly as much as I should. Are you willing to be honest with yourself? There’s your challenge for the week.

Love you guys,

John Andrews
